Study in Germany
Germany has three main types of higher education institution: universities, universities of applied sciences and art colleges. Public institutions generally charge no tuition, but some states and universities do, so check each programme.
Admission Requirements
Whether you can start straight away depends on whether your school certificate is recognised; the DAAD points to its admission database, My GUIDE and the anabin portal for this. Most programmes ask for German at CEFR B2 or higher, shown by a certificate or on-site test. If your certificate is not enough, Studienkolleg takes two semesters and ends with an assessment test. Applications go directly to the institution, through uni-assist, or through the Foundation for University Admission, depending on country, qualification and programme.
Deadlines
For the winter semester (September/October start) applications usually run from early May to 15 July. For the summer semester they run from early December to 15 January. uni-assist charges EUR 75 for the first choice and EUR 30 for each further one.
Tuition & Living Costs
State-funded institutions generally charge no tuition. Exceptions: Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students EUR 1,500 per semester, and the Technical University of Munich charges EUR 2,000 or 3,000 per semester for bachelor's and EUR 4,000 or 6,000 for master's from winter 2024/25. The semester contribution is EUR 100 to 350. A student's average expenses are about EUR 842 a month. For the visa, DAAD says applicants should show funds of EUR 992 a month, or EUR 11,904 a year, from September 2024.
Student Visa
Students from outside the EU/EEA apply for the visa at a German embassy or consulate in their home country.
