Study in New Zealand
New Zealand has eight state-funded universities, 16 institutes of technology and polytechnics and about 550 private training establishments, on a 10-level qualifications framework.
Qualification Levels
Levels 7 to 10 cover degrees, graduate and postgraduate qualifications. Institutes of technology and polytechnics teach certificates and diplomas to applied degrees; private training establishments teach foundation to diploma level.
Student Visa
You need an offer from an approved provider, insurance for travel and healthcare until the visa expires, and for tertiary study of a year or more NZD 20,000 for each year. Part-time work up to 25 hours a week and full-time in holidays is allowed. The visa can last up to 4 years and costs from NZD 850.
After Study
The Post-Study Work Visa lets graduates of degree level 7 or higher work for up to 3 years in any legal job, depending on their study. From 16 November 2026, eligibility expands to level 7 graduate diplomas studied full time in New Zealand and to bachelor's degrees completed in New Zealand or overseas. Apply within 3 months of the student visa expiring (6 months for doctoral graduates).
