Difference Between Visa Types: Tourist, Business, Transit, Study

Choosing the wrong visa type is one of the most common reasons files run into trouble, because a visa is granted for a specific purpose and does not cover another. This article explains the differences between the common types: tourist, visiting family, business, transit and study.

We relied on each authority's official definitions. Note that every country uses its own terms, and the final decision always rests with the embassy or consulate.

Is your file ready to submit?

Most refusals come from one small detail in the file. Send us your destination and travel dates and we will review your documents before you apply.

Why the Visa Type Matters

The type determines what you may do in the country, how long you may stay and which documents you need. For example, the US visitor visa does not allow study or paid work, according to the US Department of State. Choosing the type that matches your real purpose avoids problems at application or at entry.

Schengen Visas

The Schengen Visa Code, Regulation 810/2009 defines a uniform visa as valid for transit or an intended stay in the Schengen states of no more than three months in any six-month period. There is also an airport transit visa for international transit areas, and a visa with limited territorial validity issued exceptionally. Long stays are governed by each country's national law.

For practical detail, see Schengen tourist visa documents and why Schengen visas get refused, or our Schengen visa service.

US Visas

According to the visitor visa page on travel.state.gov, B-1 covers temporary business activities such as meetings and conventions, while B-2 covers tourism, visiting friends and relatives, and medical treatment. Many applicants receive a combined B-1/B-2. Study and paid work require other categories. Read the US B1/B2 tourist visa guide or see our US visa service.

Chinese Visas

The Chinese visa centre page lists categories including L for tourism, M for trade, F for academic and cultural exchange, Z for work, G for transit, Q2 for visiting relatives and X for study. For trade fairs, read the Canton Fair invitation and China visa guide, and see our China visa service.

Other Destinations

For Thailand, the answer depends on your nationality and purpose; we explain the current exemption in Do You Need a Visa for Thailand From Saudi Arabia and on our Thailand visa service page. For Brazil, see the Brazil visa guide for residents of Saudi Arabia and our Brazil visa service.

How to Choose the Right Type

  1. Define the main purpose of the trip first.
  2. Read the official definition of the category on the competent authority's site.
  3. Match your length of stay to the category's limit.
  4. Prepare documents that prove the purpose, such as an invitation or bookings.
  5. Have your file reviewed before applying, and see when to apply for a visa before you travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a tourist visa for a business meeting?

This is not advisable. In the US, for example, business activities fall under B-1 and tourism under B-2, so choose what matches your purpose.

What is the difference between a transit visa and a tourist visa?

The Schengen airport transit visa covers international transit areas of the airport and does not allow entry into the territory, according to the regulation.

Can I study on a tourist visa?

No. Study has its own categories, such as X in China, a separate classification in the US and a national visa in Schengen countries.

Does Almorad guarantee approval?

No. We prepare and review files and book appointments, and the decision belongs to the embassy or consulate.
